​This collection of art takes place in an imagined labyrinth within the subconscious mind through which personified aspects of the self must navigate. Components of the psyche are characterized as archetypal figures (heroes, mentors, monsters, etc) fusing and fighting in cyclical battles with one another, witnessed by the sentient labyrinth itself. Using charcoal and ink—two vastly different mediums in both rendering and result—these works share common motifs of crossroads, the human body in distress of fusion with nature, and spiritual intervention through birds and fantastical creatures. These motifs contribute to the underlying themes of cyclical suffering, self-conceptualization and perception, confrontation, control, and choice. This created mythology is interwoven with elements of Eastern and South Asian philosophies, Jungian psychology, and Joseph Campbell’s The Hero’ s Journey through the lens of the female experience. Inspired by moralistic fables, mythology, and fairytales spanning across cultures, this body of work draws parallels between literary story structure and the narratives we form around ourselves. These works, however, assert no moral to the story and offer no map to the maze— it seeks only to navigate the labyrinth and confront the internal witness of our own story.
